Symbol of peace

Sadako Sasaki, a young survivor of the atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima, developed leukemia a few years later. She tried to fold a thousand origami cranes in order to make her wish for healing come true. Unfortunately, it only completed 644 cranes. Her classmates completed his work and his story transformed the paper crane into a symbol of peace.

She is depicted atop the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima, lifting an origami crane into the sky.
